I invite you to think about the question that is being asked as a witness is sworn to testify in court, “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” Consider for a moment what, or more precisely where, is truth?

I believe the answer to this question is under the witness’s left hand.

Have you ever wondered why a witness places one hand on the Bible while being sworn in to testify?  The practice of using a Bible when taking an oath actually began in England hundreds of years ago, but why?

The answer is obvious to Christians; the Bible is truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

When you and I find ourselves in a position to witness our faith, we must never enter the courtroom of life without the proper tools.  Just as a carpenter needs hammer and nails, we need God’s Word.

Of course it is imperative for us to know what God’s Word actually says before we can use it as a tool to witness.  Even more importantly, we must study the Bible to understand and define exactly what we believe.

“Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31)

Eventually each of us will be called to God’s witness stand to testify the truth concerning the Gospel of Jesus Christ – so we must be prepared.

If we want to be effective witnesses, we must first know the truth. Then, through careful study of God’s Word, grow the truth. And finally, sow the truth by sharing that knowledge with others.

“My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.  Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart.” (Proverbs 4:20-21)

In heeding these instructions from Proverbs, we can expect God to remind us of all we have learned from Him when the time comes to share that knowledge.

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”  (John 14:26)

As witnesses for the defense, proclaiming the Truth in God’s Word, we will eventually be asked this important question,

“Do you swear to tell the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth?”

My answer will be, “Nothing but your Truth will help me, God!”
