Key Verse: Psalm 32:8 (NIV)
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

I’ve been a teacher for 24 years.  I find writing the lesson part of devotions and blogs much easier than writing the personal connection piece. It’s not because I have trouble thinking of (in this case) some way God has guided me. It’s because I cannot choose just one out of the tens of thousands.

As I sat completely frozen in indecision, my phone rang.  It was a former student on the line. She’s still a minor. She was living in another placement setting 500 miles away in her home state. Her state (in the form of children’s services) has been part of her life for as long as she can remember. To tell you her story would break your heart and tick you off.

When she was in Indiana, she sat in my juvenile detention classroom for a couple months because there was simply no place safer to keep her at that time. Sitting at the desk in front me, she heard me call schools all over Indiana each day, giving my phone number to everyone I talked to. And on this day, she remembered it.

She was desperate for someone to help her stay focused on God when it was so tempting to run from the nonsense that governmental entities often put minors through (even if the individual employees are well intentioned). We spent many hours on the phone talking about waiting for God’s guidance.

Even when everything worldly screamed at her to run, she persevered and stayed the path. And because she let God guide her to a strong Christian woman that she respected and then listened to, she finished her semester and is now in a safe placement.

God’s not just guiding me anymore; He’s using me in His guidance. This brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.

Understanding the Context

Psalm 32 is written by King David, and it celebrates the joy of forgiveness and restored relationship with God. After acknowledging sin and receiving mercy, David shifts to a powerful truth: God doesn’t just forgive—He also leads.

This verse is God speaking directly, offering personal guidance to His people. He didn’t stop offering his guidance and leadership in a land and time far far away. He is still the same God, still keeping his promises, offering that same guidance and leadership to you and me.

There are Three Promises in Psalm 32:8

“I Will Instruct You” — The Promise of Direction

God promises to give clear instruction. He is not distant or silent when we seek Him.

  • God’s instruction comes through Scripture, prayer, and wise counsel.
  • He doesn’t expect us to figure life out alone.

Related verse: Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trusting God leads to straight paths.

Reflection:
Where in your life do you need God’s instruction right now?

“I Will Teach You… the Way You Should Go” — The Promise of Growth

God doesn’t just give orders—He teaches. Teaching takes time, patience, and relationship.

  • God shapes our character, not just our choices.
  • His “way” is often different from our natural instincts.

Related verse: Isaiah 30:21 — “This is the way; walk in it.”

Insight:
Sometimes God’s teaching comes through experiences, not just words.

“I Will Counsel You with My Loving Eye on You” — The Promise of Care

This is one of the most personal promises in Scripture.

  • God watches over us attentively—not critically, but lovingly.
  • His guidance is not harsh; it is rooted in care and compassion.

The phrase “loving eye” suggests intimacy. God sees you, knows you, and cares deeply about your life.

Related verse: Psalm 33:18 — The Lord’s eye is on those who fear Him.

Reflection:
How does it change your perspective to know God is watching over you with love?

What This Means for Us Today

Psalm 32:8 reminds us that God’s promises are not just about what He gives, but about who He is:

  • A Teacher who patiently helps us grow
  • A Guide who shows us the right path
  • A Counselor who cares deeply about our lives

We often want quick answers, but God offers something better: His presence and guidance over time.

Application Questions

  1. Are you actively seeking God’s guidance, or relying on your own understanding?
  2. What might God be trying to teach you in your current season?
  3. How can you become more aware of God’s “loving eye” on your daily life?

A Short Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your promise to guide me. When I feel uncertain, remind me that You are instructing, teaching, and watching over me with love. Help me to trust Your direction and follow Your ways, even when I don’t fully understand. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Closing Thought

God doesn’t abandon you to guess your way through life. His promise in Psalm 32:8 is deeply personal: He will guide you every step of the way—with wisdom, patience, and love.
