“Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”— and you forgave the guilt of my sin.” (Psalm 32:5)
“Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.” (Psalm 32:1)
It was time to have our carpets cleaned. Initially, I decided we would clean only the first and second floors, since that is where most of the traffic occurs, but once the cleaning representative was on the scene, he convinced me to have our downstairs carpets cleaned as well. Adding the basement wasn’t going to cost much more, so I decided it was a good idea.
After the carpets were sanitized, they looked and smelled great, but after a couple of weeks, my husband noticed some bluish stains beginning to surface on the basement carpet. Since we rarely use that room, we were a little perplexed as to how the stains got there.
I called the cleaning company right away and explained the situation. They informed me that sometimes the flooring people write on the backing of the carpet so they know where the carpet is to be installed. She explained that if the carpet had never been cleaned (which it hadn’t) it was possible that the marker had risen to the surface when the rug began to dry. She offered to send out a technician to determine what could be done.
When he arrived, the tech sprayed a clear liquid on the surface of the carpet and then blotted the area with a white towel. Like magic, the stains disappeared.
“Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” (Psalm 51:2)
This situation reminded me that when we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, our sins are wiped clean by the blood of Christ. Our transgressions are forgiven, but we still have a sinful nature. Sin continues to surface in our lives.
On this side of heaven we can never be completely sinless. But just like the stains on my basement carpet, when we confess our transgressions to Jesus, He wipes our sin stains clean.
“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.” (Isaiah 43:25)
“…let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:22)
