“In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!” (Hebrews 5:12)

What is the difference between milk and solid food?

Solid food requires chewing!

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression, I’m going to have to chew on that for a while? In other words, a matter needs further consideration in order to be fully understood.

When we are newer Christians, we are not ready for the deep and meditative teachings of God’s Word.  Instead, like infants, we need to be fed with easy to understand, straightforward concepts (spiritual milk) for rapid growth.

“I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.” (1 Corinthians 3:2)

Although babies grow very rapidly on their mother’s milk, their bodies are not designed to thrive on milk forever.  Children need more substantial food for further growth and development.

Christians are not designed to live on spiritual milk forever either.  Eventually, we must develop “spiritual teeth” so we can meditate on and digest the deeper teachings of God.

“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” (Ephesians 4:14-15)

Are you ready for some meat?

Diligently seek the Lord with all your heart, and He will give you food for the soul.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
