My husband loves science fiction. Even though he realizes aliens are not real, he still enjoys movie dramatizations of extraterrestrial creatures visiting earth from outer space.

The concept of aliens is not a completely out of this world idea.  As a matter of fact, the Bible refers to this subject quite often. Now, before you think I’m crazy, take a look at the following passages:

“All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.” (Hebrews 11:13)

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” (Ephesians 2:19-20)

Christians are aliens, living in a foreign land. This is not our real home. For this reason, no matter what wonderful things take place in our lives, we will never find complete fulfillment on this earth. Deep down in the depth of our soul we have a longing for something else – something better. Our spirit cries out – we were created for so much more!

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10)

To know God personally, to have Him by our side and close in every imaginable way, is what our soul truly desires. The euphoria experienced by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is our greatest need and heart’s desire. We come close to being filled here on earth, when we seek God with all our heart, but even this pales in comparison to what we will experience in heaven, as we look into the eyes of Jesus.

“If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.” (Philippians 1:22-24)

Until we reach our eternal home in heaven, we are strangers in a foreign land – aliens on earth. Don’t get too discouraged with life here on earth. We aren’t home yet!
