Since our children are five years apart, our daughter had a fair amount of time as an only child before Ben came along. Heather was the apple of our eye and daddy’s little girl. Every night when Gerry came home from work, Heather ran to him, squealing with delight. Daddy was finally home! Gerry would reach down, scoop up his little girl into his arms, and dance around the living room floor singing their special song, “Daddy’s Home” by Cliff Richards.
For years, our sweet little girl thought this song was just for her—that daddy made it up. Imagine her surprise when she heard the song playing on the radio many years later.
“Daddy” she scolded “I thought that was our special song!”
It was.
Imagine Daddy’s surprise when many years later Heather had this song playing during their father/daughter dance at her wedding. I stood on the side of the dance floor bawling my eyes out, picturing the two of them twirling around our living room floor those many years ago.
Where did the time go?
“What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” (James 4:14b)
My heart aches when I think of how quickly those precious years flew by. I remember being anxious to see our children reach new milestones in life. But now I realize, looking back, it would have been better for me to slow down and thoughtfully live out each moment.
The Bible tells us that our days are all numbered. Time, once it has passed, is something that we can never get back. For this reason, we need to make the most of each and every day and hour, savoring each moment we have left.
It is said that with age comes wisdom. As I rapidly approach the years that bring understanding, allow me to share some advice that I’ve gleaned over the years.
Don’t wish your life away. And don’t place so much focus on tomorrow that you forget to enjoy today.
“…encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today…” (Hebrews 3:13a)
