Churches around the world hold special candlelight services at various times of the year. Some services may be holiday-related, while others are meant to offer hope in the midst of tragedy, as in the death(s) of loved ones.

What a breathtaking illustration of God’s light pouring through His children.  Within minutes an entire room can be illuminated by the flickering flames each person holds.

Many times in Scripture, fire is a representation the Spirit of God.  Perhaps you remember Moses and the burning bush or the pillar of fire that led the Israelites through the desert at night; and don’t forget the lampstand in the Tabernacle or the tongues of fire that came to rest on the disciples when they received the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Fire offers light, warmth, beauty, tranquility, and protection. No wonder God uses it to represent His Spirit.

“The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine upon us.” (Psalm 118:27a)

God’s Spirit, which is living inside of every believer, is much like fire.  Over the next few devotions, I would like to draw some parallels using the illustration of fire.  Hopefully these analogies will allow for introspective reflection.

Many of us have been spoiled by the modern convenience of electricity, but if the electricity were to go out, we would be forced to apply the old fashioned technique of lighting up a room with candles.

Have you noticed how a candle placed in a dark room provides enough light to illuminate a fairly large space? And yet, a candle burning in a well lit room is barely discernible.

If you and I only surround ourselves with other Christians, God’s light is not making its greatest impact. There is so much darkness in this world, and you and I are just the ones to provide God’s illumination.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.” (Isaiah 60:1)

Do you want God’s light to pour through you and make a great impact in this world?  Look for practical ways to penetrate the darkness so you can spread God’s light and love. You could help serve a meal in a homeless shelter or distribute supplies at a food pantry. Call your church and ask how you can serve in a local outreach program. Perhaps you could even go on a mission trip. There are so many ways that we can provide light to those living in the darkness, those who are in need of seeing God’s love in action through our heartfelt offerings.

There’s a great big world out there in need. Keep your fire burning and go and light your world!

Spread the love
