“I have been told many times, ‘Beth, I can’t change the way I feel.’ But we can change the way we think, which will lead to a change in the way we feel. That’s the essence of the renewed mind.” ~Beth Moore, Patriarchs
If there is one thing I’ve learned about myself, it’s that I cannot trust my feelings. I’m hyper-sensitive and (according to my husband) wear my feelings on my shoulders. For this reason, I cannot allow my emotions to control my actions and reactions.
Since feelings are often deceptive, we need to cultivate a renewed mind through the daily application of God’s Word.
How?
God has taught me a very effective means for renewing the mind. I write Scriptures that hold special significance for me on index cards and then read through them every day. Over time these Scriptures are committed to memory and become a fundamental part of my core beliefs.
My index card booklets, containing more than five-hundred Scripture verses, have been life savers for me, especially when feelings begin to lead me down a crooked path. God always sets me straight through the truth of His Word.
When I’m feeling fat and ugly…
“Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear:
Forget your people and your father’s house.
The king is enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord..” (Psalm 45:10-11)
When I feel afraid…
“This is what the LORD says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.’” (2 Chronicles 20:15b)
When I feel worried…
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)
When I feel like giving up…
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)
When I’m full of doubt…
“For the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.” (Proverbs 3:26)
When I’m feeling defeated…
“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” (Hebrews 10:35-36)
When I feel that I’m being unjustly treated…
“And we know in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
When our feelings don’t line up with God’s truth, we must make the choice to deny our feelings and trust God’s Word instead. His Word is always trustworthy!
Thank you for these encouraging words.
