“Then the trees of the forest will sing, they will sing for joy before the LORD…” (1 Chronicles 16:33)
One summer afternoon, one of my dear friends invited me to her home for a visit. Because my friend has the gift of hospitality and a unique way of making others feel extra special, I was certainly looking forward to the day.
Her house sat back off the road and was situated on a two acre lot. When I got out of my vehicle, I could hear enchanting classical music. My friend greeted me outside and immediately ushered me to her lovely garden. Words cannot adequately describe the beauty and serenity surrounding her home. With more plants and flowers than you could imagine adorning the yard, the landscape beds were garnished with tasteful, decorative ornaments, bird baths, stepping stones, and water features. The in-ground pool and water fountain completed this picture-perfect outdoor haven. It was too much to take in at once. Absolutely gorgeous!
The clear sunny day with seventy degree temperatures provided a perfect setting for lunch by the pool. When I asked my friend about the beautiful music playing in the background, she told me it was a CD from a band called the SecretGarden. How fitting!
“My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul.” (Psalm 108:1)
I enjoyed the afternoon so much. I felt as though I were experiencing a little piece of heaven. Every one of my senses was awakened that day. My eyes feasted upon the rich mosaic of vibrant colors, my nose drew in their fragrant aromas, and the melodious tunes floating in the air calmed my spirit, while the sun warmed my body. And when my friend served lunch, even my taste buds were overjoyed.
“… you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:11)
Moments such as these direct our hearts towards heaven. Although this day was spectacular by mortal standards, it does not compare with what we will experience in heaven. According to Scripture, we cannot image the splendor awaiting us, but my friend’s beautiful garden certainly whets my appetite for what is to come.
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)
Thank you, Lord, for delightful days, treasured friends, and special memories that keep us yearning for eternity with You.
“To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.” (Psalm 25:1)
