It is hard to believe that the first month of the new year is already halfway over. I have to say that 2014 has been a very strange year so far. I guess part of the strangeness is attributed to spending the first week of January playing on the beach in Mexico. Until this year, I can’t say that I’ve ever been to the beach during the winter time. My time off was definitely a welcome reprieve from the cold!

But something else seems to be contributing to the oddity I feel, though I can’t quite put my finger on it. Do you ever have moments like this? Moments where you sense change on the horizon, yet you’re not sure what is about to take place? I have this strange feeling in the pit of my stomach, one that says, “Things will never be the same again.” I feel like I have just cracked open the pages of a new book, one filled with adventures, challenges, and conquests.

I have never felt this way about the start of a new calendar. In the past, I have hoped for change in the coming new year, but never once have I sensed its foreboding presence so powerfully. I am reminded of the lyrics to a song we sing in my church, “Change is coming, can you feel it? It’s pulsing through your veins like fire.”

What will this new year bring for me? Change. Change is a guaranteed constant in our lives. Like the ocean waves of the beach in Mexico, we can choose to either fight the waves of change and struggle to stand our ground, or we can dive in head first and ride the waves to the shores of unchartered lands.

As for me? I can’t wait to see where the winds and waves will carry me.

What are your feelings about changes in the coming new year? Do you embrace the unpredictable waves, or do you strain to stand still in a constantly moving ocean?
