In the 1960’s and 70’s there was a popular television game show called Let’s Make a Deal. Hopeful contestants came dressed in crazy costumes, trying to attract the attention of the show’s host, Monty Hall. Monty would ask the audience for random items, and if someone was lucky enough to have it on their person, he or she would be the next contestant on the show. The contestants would then barter with the host to advance further in the game. At the end of each round, the contestant would be allowed to choose between one of three curtains to determine his grand prize.

Bartering is fine for game shows and garage sales but it’s not a recommended practice for our relationship with God, and yet sometimes we approach God this way, especially when there is something we greatly want from Him.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

God instructs us in His Word to present our requests before Him, but afterwards, we must trust Him with the outcome. Only He knows what is truly best for everyone involved.

God is omniscient; He knows everything: past, present, and future. What seems good to us at the time may actually be unfavorable for our future. We must trust God’s ways and realize that they are above our own.

“O Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.” (2 Samuel 7:28)

When I pray I say something like this: Father, I know You see the big picture of this situation, so if this is not something you desire to happen, then I pray You will help me be at peace with the outcome and trust Your higher ways.

God wants so much more for us than we could possibly imagine.

“Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9:10)

God knows what’s behind each curtain of our lives; let’s allow Him to choose what’s best for us.

“But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’” (Psalm 31:14)
