Today’s Post By: Rae Lynn DeAngelis

One spring my husband took some much needed vacation time to get a few things done around the house. He had a big project planned for the outdoors, but wouldn’t you know it, torrential downpours dominated the entire week. Since the outdoor plans were thwarted, we decided to implement Plan B—spring cleaning the basement. Yikes!

Every spring we enter this drudgery of going through boxes, bags, and piles of junk in order to determine which items to keep and which to eliminate.  The purge is organized into two main categories—Goodwill and trash.

Since we do this every year you wouldn’t think there was much to sort through. Wrong. I honestly have no idea where all this stuff comes from.  It’s crazy!

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”(Matthew 6:19-21)

I always feel so much better after we eliminate the needless junk.  It’s kind of freeing.

“Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on the things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”  (Colossians 3:1-3)

The same is true for our spiritual lives. Are you feeling weighed down by all the ‘junk’ accumulating in your spiritual life?  Perhaps some bad habits, unwholesome talk, or even ungodly television shows have crept their way into your daily routine.

Carrying around the needless junk can be a burdensome load, a weight so heavy that one can barely stand, let alone walk with God.

Perhaps it’s time to visit the basement of your heart and determine which things can stay and which need to go. Spend some time with God and ask Him to reveal the areas of your life that need sprucing up.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”  (Psalm 139:23-24)

Like spring cleaning the basement, purging unwholesome practices will free up some much needed space in our hearts and lives.
