“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Have you noticed how some people’s lives have heartache after heartache, while others seem practically carefree?

My aunt knows all too well that life just isn’t fair, and yet she is one of the most joyful individuals I know. Her attitude is inspiring, and her perseverance and ability to overcome life’s great trials is beyond my comprehension.

Tragically, my aunt lost three of her four children to a genetic brain disorder that was discovered at the age two. This horrific disease progressively deteriorated my cousin’s brain function until each of their small bodies fell victim to its attack. These precious children went home to be with the LORD when they were only four years old. So very tragic.

To lose one child is unimaginable – to lose three is incomprehensible!

This was not my aunt’s only loss. Her husband (my uncle) died suddenly of a heart attack when he was only forty-six years old.

How much loss and suffering can one person take?

The pain didn’t stop there.  My aunt finally remarried, but eleven years into her second marriage, her husband died from esophageal cancer. It was a slow and agonizing death.

I asked permission to share my aunt’s heart-wrenching story and she responded, “Honey, if it can help somebody then of course you can share my story.”

She told me it was only through the strength of God that she was able to get through each tragic season. The Lord placed loving individuals along the way to help her pick up the pieces of her life and carry on.

“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God…” (Exodus 34:6)

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)

My aunt’s wounds have been carefully bandaged by the Great Physician.  The scars hidden beneath her beautiful smile serve as gentle reminders of God’s power to heal when life just isn’t fair.

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
