Have you ever tried to navigate your way through a Rubik’s cube? The goal of this brainteaser is to line-up coordinating colors on each side of the block. Back in the ‘80s this challenging puzzle was all-the-rave. Nearly every child had one, and if you didn’t have one, you knew someone who did. The cube was packaged with all the colors properly aligned (proving the puzzle was indeed solvable), but as soon as you began twisting and turning the blocks this way and that, all the colors became jumbled. The challenge of the piece was to realign the cube back to its original form (but as far as I could tell—the task was impossible).

I remember spending hours trying to figure out how to achieve the proper alignment, but no matter how hard I tried, I was only able to solve one side of the puzzle. Whenever I began working on another side, the previously aligned colors got mixed-up again.

Sometimes my life is like that Rubik’s cube. Just about the time I get one aspect of my life in order, it seems that other areas suffer from lack of attention. When I spend time working on the ministry, I have less time to devote to housework or family. When organizing our home, my job and family show signs of neglect. I’m even perplexed when it comes to relationships. When I focus on one, another suffers. I just can’t seem to keep everything working at the same time.

Can you relate?

“I know, O Lord, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.” (Jeremiah 10:23)

I recently watched a YouTube video with step by step instructions for how to solve a Rubik’s cube. It was fascinating. Ironically, the first step for solving a Rubik’s cube is to line-up one of the sides into the formation of a cross.

How interesting.

With the cross in place, solving the rest of the puzzle is just a matter of following an algorithm (sequence of steps) to realign the colors in their proper place.

Keeping our lives in balance requires a similar mentality. Christ must be at the center of all we do and we must ask God to help us prioritize our steps along the way. God is first… then family, job, and everything else.

“Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O Lord.” (Psalm 89:15)

Life is a challenge for sure. But as long as we keep the proper algorithm in place, solving life’s challenges and maintaining balance is just a few twists and turns away.

“I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.” (Proverbs 4:11-12)
