While on a backpacking trip in Wyoming this summer, my husband and I needed to cross a large, fast-moving stream.  Crossing safely was going to be tricky as there were no nice bridges, no logs, and not even stepping stones to hop across.  Just as we were searching for an easier crossing place, a ranger hiking down the mountain assured us this was the safest spot.  Adding to the challenge, I had to cross with my backpack on while the shoes were to come off.  Did I mention the water was FREEZING cold??  As an inexperienced hiker, I’d never done anything quite like this before and was just a tad nervous…

Observing my husband and then the ranger make their ways across, I hoped to get some pointers (and to delay the inevitable).  After receiving some encouragement from the ranger and being too stubborn to turn back, I finally mustered up the courage to set out, braving the icy water and slippery rocks – barefoot and uncomfortable.  Whimpering nearly the entire time, I managed to make it safely across – tense and with numb feet, but safe.  : )

There are times in life when we will have to face and endure unpleasant, challenging, and unwelcome circumstances.  It’s not a possibility, it’s actually a promise.  God says in Isaiah 43, “When you pass through the waters…”  And in John 16, Jesus states, “In this world you will have trouble…”  The word if is not used; He says “when” and “you will.”  Fortunately for those in Christ, there are even better promises that accompany those little words…

“But now, this is what the LORD says – he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior… Do not be afraid, for I am with you…’ ” (Isaiah 43:1-3, 5)

“In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”  (John 16:33)

Whatever you may currently or soon be facing, it is my prayer that in the midst of those challenging times, you rely on God’s promises of protection and power.  You will find peace in Him as you do.
