During our trip to Hilton Head, we went on a shark fishing excursion where a fishing vessel took us out some distance from the harbor and dropped anchor.  After a brief set of instructions, highlighting the best techniques for baiting your hook and catching a shark, everyone gathered around the railing, ready to cast their lines. With approximately eighty passengers onboard, we were packed in like sardines.

I am not much of an angler (I don’t even bait my own hook), so I’m a little embarrassed to admit that my seven shark catch was the highest number caught that day.  What is even more distressing is the fact that our (then) teenage son didn’t catch a single fish.

Although Ben was fishing in the very same place, using the very same bait, and getting bites by the very same sharks, his hook consistently came up empty.

Why?

Apparently, he couldn’t sense the sharks nibbling his bait.

Have you noticed how some people hear God’s inaudible voice, and feel the Holy Spirit’s promptings time after time, while others do not? The same God speaks to all of His children and directs us in various ways; however, it is only the discerning and sensitive Christian who senses God on a regular basis.

So, how can we be more discerning?

We must become more conscious of God’s leading by tuning in to Him through ongoing prayer, daily meditation, and quality time in His Word. The more time we spend in God’s presence, the more likely we are to hear and recognize His voice.

“Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:9)

God is definitely speaking. The question is… are we listening?

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:15)
