“If a man cannot get through to God it is because there is a secret thing he does not intend to give up.” ~Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

Sin separates us from God. When we sin, God doesn’t abandon us, but our relationship definitely suffers.  God is holy, and for this reason He cannot tolerate sin.  Our iniquity becomes a barrier, separating us from the full benefits of a close relationship with God.

“Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save,
nor his ear too dull to hear.
 But your iniquities have separated
you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
so that he will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:1-2)

Within months after giving my life to Christ, I could definitely sense some distance building between God and myself.  As I grew to know Him more, I wanted to go deeper in my walk, but for some reason I couldn’t get there. Then God revealed to me the reason. I still had a huge secret I was carrying around concerning my eating disorder, and God was telling me, if I wanted to get to the next level with Him, I needed to make some changes in my life.

It’s kind of funny how the closer I grow in my relationship with God, the more sin it seems I discover in my life.  I guess God reveals small amounts of our sin when He knows we are strong enough to handle it. Once we acknowledge our iniquity, seek forgiveness and repent, God will weed the sin from our lives.

Are you sensing some distance between you and God?  Ask Him to open your eyes to any needed change.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)

It has been my experience that God jumps all over that kind of invitation.  With great gentleness He will let us know where changes need to be made.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

May we be moldable in God’s hands and become clearer reflections of His Son, Jesus.
