Today’s Post By: Rae Lynn DeAngelis

September 11, 2001 was a day that our country will never forget. Ask anyone who was old enough to remember and they can probably tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the tragic news that our country was under attack.

Early that morning the phone rang. It was my husband who was out of town for work.

“Rae Lynn, turn on the television!” From his anxious tone, I knew something was terribly wrong. I was homeschooling our two children at the time and although we were up and moving, we were clueless about what was taking place. As I rushed to turn on our television, my husband relayed the shocking news.

“Rae Lynn, a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center!”

What? It didn’t completely register at first. How does a plane accidentally hit a building? As images appeared on the screen, the kids and I watched in horror as the shocking scene played out. When a second plane flew directly into the south tower, reality sunk in—this was no accident.

Like the rest of the nation, we were paralyzed with shock. Our two children, then nine and fourteen, kept asking me, “Mom, what’s going on?” I honestly didn’t know. We were tethered to the television, watching the grave images as they scrolled across the screen, trying to make sense of what we were witnessing. People were jumping out of the smoldering buildings to their death, choosing what must have seemed a better alternative than burning to death in the scorching flames. I can’t even imagine.

Moments later, the news anchor announced that the Pentagon had also been hit. We were under full throttle attack. I wondered… will our little town be a target? While trying to process everything, the thought suddenly occurred to me that my husband who traveled by plane every week could have just as easily been on one of those jets. I trembled at the thought.

During the aftermath, many wondered where God had been on that clear September morning. They questioned why a loving God would allow something so horrific to happen.

In the days, weeks, and months that followed, story after story revealed exactly where God had been. He was right there, providing courage to rescue workers, peace to the fallen victims, and comfort to those who had lost loved ones.

“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” (Psalm 91:4) “I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:8)

Where was God in the midst of all this?

One little question with enormous implications. Split this sentence in two and find your answer.

Where was God? In the midst of all this!

“Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed; for you will make them turn their backs when you aim at them with drawn bow. Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength; we will sing and praise your might.” (Psalm 21:11-13)
