One of the things I love about my husband is what I have come to affectionately refer to as his “food amnesia.” Every time I cook something he likes, his response is the same. “Babe, this is the best you’ve ever made.”
Now, I am not a Chef by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, there was a time in my life when I didn’t like cooking at all. I only cooked because one of my many jobs in the home was to ensure we didn’t all go hungry. And thankfully, most of the time, my family enjoyed what I brought to the table (pun intended).
In more recent years, I have come to enjoy cooking for family, friends, and loved ones. It’s become one of the ways I show love and appreciation for them.
In the early years of our marriage, I followed recipes faithfully. But now, I’m a little more adventurous. After many years in the kitchen, one begins to sense the appropriate number of shakes, pours, and dashes to satisfy the taste buds. Recipes have become a general guideline that I alter depending on my mood, creativity, or ingredients on hand. For this reason, no two meals taste the same. And yet, my husband still says, “Babe, it’s the best you’ve ever made.” When you have a husband showing his appreciation like this, it’s a great incentive to keep cooking.
Now, to be clear, my husband is not suffering from dementia, nor is he forgetful by nature. In fact, , he’s the smartest, clearest mind person I know. He just chooses to focus on the here and now.
Lately, I’ve noticed that my husband’s “amnesia” stretches to other areas of life, like sermon messages heard, movies seen, or adventures experienced.
Perhaps, subconsciously, my husband has learned the secret to experiencing a fulfilling life is to live each day to the fullest and embrace each moment like it’s the best.
After all, God tells us in His Word:
- We are not promised tomorrow. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:34).
- Let go of yesterday. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah 43:18-19)!
- Live for today. “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today” (Hebrews 3:13).
That thing (whatever it may be) really can be the best, if we stop comparing it to yesterday and simply enjoy what we have right now. And when we truly keep this mindset in place, the reality is – when tomorrow comes – it will get better.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8).
“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11).
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:12-13).
