When our kids were little, we hosted treasure hunts for holiday and birthday celebrations. It was a great way to add fun to an already joyful occasion. Each child was given a first clue, which led to another clue, and so on. Delayed gratification was a great way to build anticipation. After all, who doesn’t like searching for hidden treasure!
Easter Sunday, the prize was a single egg with money inside. On birthdays, the treasure trove was a goody bag filled with candy and party favors.
Our kids loved the hunt and couldn’t wait to see what was awaiting them at the end of their expedition. Gathering clues was like putting together pieces of a puzzle. With each new piece of information, the picture became more and more clear. My husband and I loved hiding the clues, and we greatly enjoyed watching our children’s reaction when a new piece of evidence was uncovered, pointing their way to the long-awaited treasure.
“I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name” (Isaiah 45:3).
The study of God’s Word is like going on a treasure hunt. There is no greater fortune to be found than that which is buried in the pages of Scripture. It is where God reveals Himself, and we get to discover the great reward of eternal life in heaven with Him. God intentionally buried clues in His Word so that we could experience the great joy of discovering who He is and what a relationship with Him means.
“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:1-5).
God gets great joy from watching His children discover the treasure He has hidden. He loves revealing Himself to us.
You and I have treasure awaiting us at the end of our journey on earth, and it’s priceless. God provides the clues, Jesus paid the price, and it’s available for the taking. Grab hold of your treasure, and never let go.
Seek and you shall find.
“I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread” (Job 23:12).
