By Alison Feinauer
I woke up to a drip, drip, drip at 5 A.M. This wasn’t a soft, light drip. It was a fast, heavy, you’d better take notice drip. I rushed downstairs and saw an enormous, 2′ by 4′ water bubble forming on our ceiling that, at any moment, was going to burst. I grabbed a huge bucket to catch the water. We started cutting the ceiling to relieve the water pressure and find the source of the leak. My husband kept cutting away soaking wet drywall until he finally found it. We were at a loss because the hole in the pipe was in the middle of the pipe, not at a joint, nor from a pipe bursting. It was not typical.
In the midst of this episode, I was panicked. I needed to get ready for my 5:30 A.M. small-group and I asked my husband whether I should cancel and call off from work. He said, “No, there’s nothing you can do right now. We will figure this out after work and get to the root of what caused this.” We left a bucket under the leak and let it drip. It was slow and steady at that point.
Have you had that happen in your life? You wake up to this huge problem that needs immediate attention, like right now! Your kid gets in trouble, you find out about your husband’s affair, you finally give into that huge temptation that’s taunted you, you have an unexpected expense on top of that huge credit card bill you’ve accumulated, depression has you at your complete lowest, you see a picture someone took of you and you realize your weight is the heaviest you’ve ever been, etc?
All the alarms go off in your heart and your head and you are panicked? Devastated? Don’t know where to start or what to do?
I’m quickly reminded of a scripture: “So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic” (Isaiah 28:16 NIV).
When I saw the bubble of water, I panicked. I was amazed by my husband’s reaction; however, he’s been in many situations like this with other houses he’s worked on. He has experience. He knows there’s a root to the problem, and he’ll get to the bottom of it. He’s not afraid or worried at all.
That’s how our God is. He has experience. He sees our enormous situation and is not worried. In fact, He promises peace and no need to panic when your foundation is built on Him. He can take your mess and turn it into a miracle.
He knows every little choice or decision that has led you to where you are now. He may have put out warnings you ignored or were blinded to, but He’s not leaving you when it’s a drip, drip, drip that is screaming for your attention. He doesn’t want you to panic, but He wants to show you His power.
I must warn you, healing doesn’t happen overnight. For me, it’s been years in the making. He knows where it all began and the process you need to go through for healing. He knows where you need to begin and each step you need to take. And He will be there every single step along the way.
Later that night my husband found that it was a tiny screw that had been rubbing against this pipe and had corroded it enough to put a hole in the pipe. This wasn’t an overnight issue. This had been a problem in the making, a little corrosion over a long time.
God, open my eyes to the things, big and small, corroding my heart, my time with You, my joy, my peace, my relationships, and foundation. Show me the cracks. When I’m put to the test, I want to not be shaken, but to trust deeply in You. You know the explosion that has happened in each of our lives or the one that’s about to come our way. I’m asking You to give us insight and wisdom on how to handle it. Give us a heavenly perspective into the changes You want to make. Help us get to the root of the issue and help us be steady with our eyes fixed on You. Feed us Your word and heal us through Your Truth. Expand our knowledge and love for You. We love and trust You, Amen.
