When I was a little girl, my dad and I had a special way of communicating. It drove my brother and sister crazy! My siblings would put our secret language to the test. Dad would babble a few words and then ask me to interpret. Of course Dad always approved that my translation was correct.
Although our special language was nothing more than a clever ruse to trick my brother and sister, our nonsensical babble made me feel a special connection to my dad. Through our secret language I felt cherished and loved.
Today it is my Heavenly Father who communicates with me in special ways. God and I have a special connection with one another—a secret love language known only to us. Our furtive dialect is not a childhood game—it’s the real thing.
“Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” (1 Samuel 3:8-9)
When we grow very close to God, we begin to experience Him in profound ways. One of the ways we experience God intimately is through ongoing communication. We often think communication with God is only through prayers, meditation, and hearing Him speak to us through His Word. While these are wonderful ways to communicate with our Heavenly Father, they are not the only ways God speaks to His children.
God knows each of us intimately, He knows exactly how to get our attention. One of the special ways God speaks to me is through a succession of three numbers that are the same.
For example: I pick up my phone and the time is 4:44. I glance at a highway billboard sign and a phone number begins with 222. The highway mile marker says 111.
It’s not a coincidence! God knows that in this way He is able to get my attention. It’s become a special reminder that God is right there with me.
It happens so many times throughout the day that I have even started pointing it out to my husband. “Look”, I say, “777—God is speaking to me.” When I first started pointing it out to him, he thought I was a bit crazy. But now even he admits that as often as it happens there’s no way it could be a coincidence.
So why does God continue to speak to me in this unique way?
I think it’s because He delights in knowing He’s able to get my attention. These three numbers in succession remind me that God is Three in One—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Each time my attention is drawn to these numbers, I immediately stop what I’m doing and pray, thanking God for revealing Himself and praising Him for who He is. I tell him how much I love Him and how much I appreciate that He takes time to speak to me.
Like any cherished relationship, it takes time to build intimacy with God. God will speak to you in special ways too. It may be different than how He speaks to me, but I can promise you this. If you ask God to reveal Himself to you in special ways, He will.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8).
Why?
Because the Lord is eager to reveal Himself to us.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3).
Jeremiah 33:3…. Well, would you look at that! God speaks…. again.
