“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away” (Matthew 13:24:25).
Every year my husband spreads a chemical across our lawn to help it stay healthy, lush, and green. Each application of Weed and Feed enriches the soil and nourishes the desirable part of our lawn—grass. At the same time, the product distributes poison that quickly destroys any unwanted weeds. We wisely care for our yard now, but this wasn’t always the case. In the early years of our marriage, especially when finances were tight, lawn fertilizer wasn’t a particularly high priority.
The effects of neglect became obvious with the progressing onslaught of weeds. The little yellow flowers looked enchanting at first. But after few short days, the delightful blossoms morphed into mysterious white orbs that released a frenzy of seed spores throughout our cul-de-sac.
The weeds were out of control and our neighbors became increasingly annoyed. We eventually realized the value of time and money spent treating our lawn. The results were not immediate, but the investment offered a good return with persistent effort.
We may not realize it at the time, but neglecting our spiritual health is an open invitation for Satan to sow an intrusive garden of lies. Deception that is laced with a small dose of truth appears harmless at first. Everybody’s doing it… You can stop anytime you want… You deserve better… Life is short…You only live once…. You’re not hurting anyone…
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
The mind becomes entangled with deception when we do not protect ourselves with a daily measure of God’s unchanging truths.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)
Whether you struggle with food, body-image, self-esteem, or something else, meditation on scriptural truths that are aimed at your specific areas of weakness will help your mind, body, and soul remain healthy and strong. Here’s a free guide to get you started!
Continuous deviations from that which is noble, right, and true do not impact us alone. Disordered thoughts and behaviors, left to their own devise, poison the world around us too.
Make time for Jesus and allow Him to pour His life-giving truths into your spirit. Rest assured… your family, friends, and even neighbors will thank you!
“They are like a well-watered plant in the sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden.” (Job 8:16)
“But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.” (Psalm 5:11)
