I’m reminded over and over again that this physical world is in a constant state of disrepair, falling prey to the effects of time and decay.
Foundations crack. Cars quit. Sweaters snag. Appliances fail. Roofs leak. Metal rusts. Roads crumble. Décor outdates. Dust covers.
And we haven’t even gotten to the body yet!
Skin wrinkles. Hair grays. Boobs sag. Teeth decay. Weight accumulates. Cancer invades. Bones ache. And hair grows everywhere except the one place we want it.
Never fear the world is here.
Mankind has a policy, potion, and pill for just about everything we could possibly imagine: hair color, implants, serums, medications, whitening kits, diet programs, exercise equipment, health treatments, pain relievers, and hair growing potions.
No judgement from me. I’ve spent more than my share of time, money, and energy searching for the proverbial fountain of youth. Just the other day I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and came across advertisement promising wrinkle removal.
At age fifty-one wrinkles are becoming more prominent; therefore, the promise of a serum making me look instantly younger was enticing. I clicked on the post and began reading, until I got to the price tag that is. Yikes! It’s expensive to look young.
The beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar market. And that doesn’t include the healthcare business.
Let me be clear; I’m all for caring for our bodies. After all, our body is a temple for the Holy Spirit. But I wonder. Are we placing far more focus on the body, which perishes in the end, or the soul, the part of us that never dies?
Fellow Believer, this world is not our home. Our body is merely a shell – a tent – and it has an expiration date.
The spirit is another matter. We get to take that with us. Wouldn’t it make more sense to invest our greatest time, finances, and resources on the part that lives forever?
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16)
One day (perhaps very soon) you and I will stand before Jesus. Are we ready? Did we use the time we’ve been given wisely? Did we invest in our relationship with Jesus? Did we tell others about Him who saves? Did we use our gifts, talents, and resources for God’s Kingdom?
Friends, time is running out. The true age-defying remedy is not found in a serum. It’s found in the spirit.
“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.” (2 Corinthians 5:1-3)
