Confession time. I love my i-Phone! Maybe a little bit too much. Throughout the day I find myself picking it up, glancing at the screen, scrolling through my apps to see if someone has called, left a message, or posted something interesting on Facebook.
It’s amazing how quickly we adapt, conform, and even depend on the world around us. It wasn’t very long ago that I didn’t even have a cell phone, let alone a smart phone.
And is it ever smart! I can do so much with this little handheld device. Check the weather, get the latest breaking news, create a grocery list, schedule upcoming events, send a message, listen to music, make a purchase, read a book, get directions. Oh yea… and make a phone call.
While I enjoy the benefits just mentioned, I have grown to love my iPhone even more for another reason. My smartphone helps me connect with Jesus.
I have a Bible app that allows me to look up Scriptures in an instant. I can listen to inspiring sermon messages and Christian music throughout the day. I’m able to encourage a friend with God’s love through text messaging or find encouragement for myself through my devotion apps.
I have a few of them, but my favorite is Jesus Calling. This particular devotion by Sarah
Young is written from the perspective of Jesus who is speaking directly to the reader. I have a reminder set on my phone that pops up first thing in the morning. The reminder simply says Jesus Calling.
How cool is that! In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of each morning, the God of the universe calls out to me (on my iPhone, no less) beckoning me to come and spend some time with Him.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
Through our frequent conversations together, Jesus reminds me how much He loves spending time with me. And I love spending time with Him too. In fact, each morning spent reading devotions, studying the Bible, and writing in my prayer journal is the best part of my day.
What about you? Are you intentional about growing your relationship with Jesus?
Would you like to hear from God more, get direction, find encouragement, gain wisdom, and develop discernment?
Since many of us have technology-based tools like smart phones, notepads, and computers, incorporating technology into our relationship with God makes a lot of sense.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
- Download an app like Jesus Calling onto your phone and connect with God first thing in the morning
- Stream sermon messages through the Podcast app when you’re in your car, cleaning the house, or going for a walk, etc.
- Download Bible Gateway and you will have the most popular versions of the Bible at your fingertips. You can even search out Scriptures or topics using key words in the search engine
- Journal your thoughts and prayers through the Prayer Notes app
There are many great resources to help us grow in our relationship with Jesus, but we must be intentional.
Jesus is calling. Don’t keep Him waiting any longer.
