So much of the entertainment industry is biased, endorsing only those who encapsulate both talent and physical beauty. The Voice (a television program that promotes undiscovered singing talent) defies this cultural norm, judging contestants on singing ability alone through blind auditions. Judges are not able to see contestants until they push a button, staking their claim to coach the new-found artist.
Contestant Jordan Smith took the world by storm when he gave one stellar performance after another. Viewers fell in love and rallied to his side.
Why?
Jordan defied the odds.
Although he didn’t fit into the stereotypical mold of stardom, he stood poised and composed week after week. Jordan Smith didn’t try to be someone he was not. He embraced who God created him to be and the world was captivated by his confidence.
Jordan’s blind audition left the judges stunned because they assumed the singer behind the microphone was a woman. What they found instead was a burly guy with a meek and humble spirit, singing for his life.
What captured my heart most was the fact that Jordan embodied that which mankind craves at the most primal level—to be loved and accepted—just as we are.
As we embrace our unique value in this world and shine brighter than the noon day sun, we too will bring glory to our Father in heaven.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
