It’s probably safe to say we can all look back on our lives and see where we’ve made poor decisions. Sometimes one poor decision leads to another… and another… until we hit rock bottom and realize the height from which we have fallen.
The Bible is full of examples of individuals who made poor decisions. God preserved these historical events in His Word so we could learn through the mistakes of others.
David’s midnight stroll on a rooftop led to lust, infidelity, pregnancy, murder, and the untimely death of his child.
Jonah’s disregard for God’s command to preach to the Ninevite people landed him in the belly of a great fish.
The Israelite’s lack of faith to capture the Promised Land led to their forty year wanderings in the desert.
Sarah’s decision to use her maidservant Hagar to help God fulfill His promise to give Abraham a son led to her broken heart and dysfunctional family.
“There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12)
God promises to provide a way out when we find ourselves in the middle of temptation. The question is—are we willing to accept His help?
“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
If we could just accept God’s help when He offers it the first time around, we wouldn’t have to fall all the way to the bottom of the slippery slope.
Perhaps you’re at a place in life where you’re plummeting fast. Look up and call out to Jesus! He’s right there, waiting to grab your hand.
“I sinned, and perverted what was right, but I did not get what I deserved. He redeemed my soul from going down to the pit, and I will live to enjoy the light.” (Job 33:27-28)
Don’t wait until you hit rock bottom. I can tell you from personal experience; the bottom of the pit is a dark, lonely, and very painful place to be.
“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18)
Take the hand of Jesus; He will help you up and give you a firm place to stand.
