My husband and I were traveling down an old country road when our vehicle hit a patch of black ice and began to slide out of control. Thankfully, Gerry had some experience with driving on ice. Instead of panicking, he remained calm and held the steering wheel steady and straight. Avoiding the natural instinct to slam his foot on the brake, he gently pumped the brake up and down until the car slowed enough for him to regain control of the vehicle.
“Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies—make straight your way before me.” (Psalm 5:8)
Sometimes in life we feel as though we’re sliding across ice—everything is out of control. No matter which way we turn we seem to be going the wrong way.
Let’s face it, there are things in life that we just can’t control: illness, people, weather, tragic circumstances, and spiritual warfare, to name a few. When life circumstances spin out of control, we need to resist the temptation to slam on the brakes. We need to keep our hands fixed firmly on the wheel and our eyes focused straight ahead. Allow the Lord to assume control over your situation, and He will slow things down.
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” (Isaiah 30:21)
When it feels like our lives are spinning out of control, the Lord is faithful. He will direct us back towards secure and solid ground.
