Today’s Post By: Rae Lynn DeAngelis
When I was a little girl, my dad and I had a special way of communicating with one another. I don’t mind telling you, it drove my brother and sister crazy. Many times my siblings would put our secret language to the test. Dad would babble a few words and then they would ask me to interpret. Dad always approved that my translation was correct. To my brother and sister (or anyone else who was listening), our coded conversations sounded like gibberish.
Although our special language was nothing more than a clever ruse to trick my brother and sister, our nonsensical babble made me feel a special connection to my dad. Through our secret language I felt cherished and loved.
Today it is my heavenly Father who communicates with me in special ways. God and I have a special connection with one another—a secret language of sorts known only to us. Our furtive dialect is not a childhood game—it’s the real thing.
“Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” (1 Samuel 3:8-9)
When we grow very close to God, we begin to experience Him in profound ways. One of the ways we experience God intimately is through ongoing communication. We often think of communication with God as only prayers, meditations, and hearing Him speak to us through His Word. And while these are wonderful ways to communicate with our heavenly Father, they are not the only ways God speaks to His children.
Because God knows each one of us intimately, He knows exactly how to get our attention. One of the special ways God speaks to me is through a succession of three numbers that are the same.
Every day, at different times, God directs my attention to numbers in sequence of three. For example: I just happen to pick up my phone and the time reads 4:44. I just happen to glance at the highway billboard sign as I’m passing by and the advertisement’s phone number begins with 222. After driving the highway for miles, my eyes are suddenly drawn to mile marker 111. It’s not a coincidence! God knows that in this way He is able to get my attention. It’s become a special reminder that God is right there with me.
It happens so many times throughout the day that I have even started pointing it out to my husband. “Look”, I say, “777—God is speaking to me.” When I first started pointing these out to him, he thought I was a crazy. But now, even he admits that as often as it happens there’s no way it could be a coincidence.
So why does God continue to speak to me in this unique way? I think it’s because He delights in knowing He’s able to get my attention. These numbers remind me that God is Three in One—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each time my attention is drawn to these numbers, I immediately stop what I’m doing and pray, thanking God for revealing Himself and praising Him for who He is. I tell him how much I love Him and appreciate knowing that He takes time to speak to me.
Like any cherished relationship, it takes time to build intimacy with God. God will speak to you in special ways too. It will likely be different than how He speaks to me, but this I can promise you… If you ask God to reveal Himself to you in special ways, He will.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8)
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
Jeremiah 33:3…. Well there you have it! God speaks!
