Several years ago, my husband and I were invited to our friend’s home for dinner. When we first walked into the house, we spent a few minutes chatting with our friends in the foyer. While we were talking, my husband reached into a candy dish that was sitting on a nearby table and popped a few butter mints into his mouth. With a look of shock and repulse, he quickly spit the candy into his hand and turned to our friends who were laughing hysterically.

The butter mints were not mints at all. They were air fresheners! Of course we spent the rest of the evening joking about my husband’s extra fresh breath. We couldn’t resist.

This experience reminds me that looks can be deceiving. Just because something appears to be the real deal doesn’t mean it is.

“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.” (Psalm 34:8)

Before you became a Christian you likely spent a fair amount of time looking to be filled by something other than God. You thought these things would satisfy, but you eventually came away feeling even emptier than before.

Satan is a master of disguises. He is very good at making bad things appear good. If we would fully comprehend the dangers involved in our times of temptation, it is likely that we wouldn’t take the bait.

“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

When I first began my eating disorder behavior, I was simply hoping to lose weight. I never dreamed it would hold me captive so long. All I saw was the immediate gratification and desired outcome. I didn’t realize I was heading towards twenty-five years of bondage to bulimia. By the time I realized that I’d been duped, I was powerless to break free.

There is only one type of filling that’s always good for our souls – Jesus Christ. He came so that we might have life to the fullest.

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Taste and see for the LORD is good.
