Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?

What little girl hasn’t twirled in front of the mirror, seeking an answer to this universal question?  It’s as if the desire for sanctioned approval is part of our DNA. And perhaps it is.

Deep within the heart of every young girl is a desire to be beautiful, cherished, and loved. We want others to stand in awe. Our quest for significance is not necessarily bad or sinful. It only becomes a problem when we seek to find significance apart from God.

Unfortunately, because we live in a broken world and are influenced by the enemy’s deception, rather than embrace our God-given purpose and individualism (that which sets us apart from one another), we instead gather crumbs of leftover accolades that fall from our self-absorbed society. Through a very warped perception of ourselves and others, we quickly realize that we can never quite measure up to the standards of this world.

As an impressionable young teenager, I got up early every morning (at 4:00 am) and spent three grueling hours getting ready for school. Thick layers of makeup and hairspray became a makeshift armor of sorts that I hoped would safeguard me from the harsh judgment of others.

Oh, how I wish I could travel back in time! I would pay a visit to my adolescent self, pull her close, and speak tenderly to her heart:

Rae Lynn, you don’t need all that makeup. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. (1 Peter 3:3-4)

You are a one of a kind daughter of the King. Quit trying to be like everyone else. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

Do not compare the inside of yourself with the outside of others. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

God has a plan and purpose for your life and it is more amazing than you can imagine. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(Jeremiah 29:11)

Hold on to the teachings of Jesus. His truth will set you free! The KING is enthralled by your beauty. Honor Him for He is your Lord. (Psalm 45:11)

Sweet sister, never forget that in the eyes of the One who fashioned you in His likeness, you are indeed beautiful, cherished, and loved—the fairest of them all!

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)
