Peasants Revolt is a card game that consists of six players—three positions of royalty and three peasants. From the very beginning of the game, the royalty players are given an unfair advantage over the peasants because they receive the best cards. The object of the game is to eliminate your cards as fast as possible. The manner in which each person goes out of the game determines the player’s position the following hand. The game gets really interesting when one of the peasants (after catching a much needed break) gains control of the game and goes out first.

The old adage the rich get richer echoes an unfortunate reality in this broken world.

“Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” (Matthew 13:12)

At first glance, the concept in Matthew chapter thirteen appears to give credence to the axiom, the rich get richer.

However, to fully grasp any verse in the Bible we must view it within context.

The passage in question can be found in the parable of the four soils. As we take a closer look at this verse, we see it is not related to material gain at all. Jesus was actually teaching a spiritual concept using something His listeners could relate to in nature.

The premise behind the Lord’s parable correlates to how much we desire to learn and grow in our knowledge of God through meditation and study of God’s Word—the Bible.

Like the seed sown on the path, are we claiming Jesus as Lord and Savior without ever taking time to know Him personally?

Or perhaps like the rocky soil, we go through the motions, reading our Bible and attending church, but never allow God’s truths to sink into the core of our being. We are hearers of the Word but not doers.

Or maybe we identify more with the seeds sown among thorns. Understanding of God’s truth is being choked out by sin or circumstance.

At different times in my life, I can relate to every one of these soils. It wasn’t until I allowed God full access into my life and began seeking Him with all my heart that the Word of God began to take root and bring forth an abundant harvest.

The more that I seek God with intentionality the more fertile and productive God’s Word becomes in my life. The result is even more seeds scattered. Each seed planted has the potential to cultivate a greater harvest later on.
