“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Evenings spent on our patio gazing into the glowing embers of our outdoor fire place is one of my favorite pastime activities. Gerry and I have grown to treasure peaceful moments such as these, free of distractions.

Nature’s nighttime song and dance reminds us we are not the only ones drawn to light. Creepy-crawlies dart into the flames unaware of the hazards awaiting them while spiders craft  intricate webs around light fixtures, hoping to attract unsuspecting prey.

In much the same way, Christians can be lured by flares of deception cloaked in synthetic sources of light.

“Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15)

“For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” (Mark 13:22)

Since even the elect can be seduced by the enemy’s web of lies, how can we protect ourselves from being misled?

One of the best methods to defend ourselves against Satan’s increasingly deceptive ways is to test everything against the only reliable source of truth—the Bible.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

As we study the Bible and fix our eyes on Jesus, the One True Light of the world, God illuminates areas of darkness, exposes the enemy’s true identity and motives, and keeps our foot from being snared.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8)

“’Be alert and of sober mind.’ Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” (1 Peter 5:8)
