“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8)

Most of the time, God speaks through His Word. But there are times when He takes a more intimate approach and speaks in ways unique and personal to each of us. He does this so that we won’t mistake that it is Him. God knows us so well.  He knows exactly how to get our attention.

“God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.” (Job 37:5)

Several years ago, our son entered the public school system after being home schooled for many years. Entering high school can be a scary enterprise for anyone, but for someone who hadn’t been to regular school since first grade, it was an even more daunting experience.

On book days, students have an opportunity to get their books, practice their locker combinations, and locate their classrooms before the first day of school. This particular year, however, the school was under construction.  No one was permitted to navigate the building for safety reasons. Our son wasn’t allowed to locate his locker or his classes. Talk about a stressful situation!

I was just about to break down and cry. My youngest was heading out into an unfamiliar environment and I couldn’t be there to help him navigate through it.

As we stood in line to get his schedule and pay for his books, I don’t remember praying, but God evidently heard the unspoken prayer in my heart. He understood my anxiousness and was compassionate to my plight.

When we received my son’s class schedule, his locker combination was typed in the top right hand corner of the page… 27-37-47 (777). God’s perfect number! As I stared at the numbers on the schedule, God spoke to my heart and reassured me, Rae Lynn, you have diligently watched over your son for the last 15 years…. I’m taking it from here. Don’t worry.  I will be with him, walking by his side every step of the way. He will be just fine.

“The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic.” (Psalm 29:4)

I felt a rush of God’s peace and had total confidence God would follow though with His promise.  God spoke to me in the manner which He knew would get my attention.  It was undeniably Him.

God is speaking. The question is… are we listening?

“Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:9)

“The LORD our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with him.” (Deuteronomy 5:24)
