Have you ever slept with your clothes on so that you could be ready at a moment’s notice to get up and go?

Some do, especially those who are working in a particular profession, such as fireman or on-call physician.

“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,” (Luke 12:35)

“You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Luke 12:40)

Scripture tells us to keep ourselves dressed and ready for the Lord’s coming because we do not know the hour of His impending arrival.

Obviously, this isn’t an admonition to sleep with our clothes on, but rather, it is a forewarning to be dressed spiritually – being clothed with Christ – so that we are ready for Christ’s second coming.

“For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” (Isaiah 61:10)

God refers to the church as His Bride. In biblical times, as soon as a couple became engaged, it was as if they were already married even though they did not yet live together.

When a couple became betrothed, the groom would go back to the home of his father and begin preparing a place for his bride to come and live with him. Since the bride never knew when her groom would come back for her, she needed to be ready at a moment’s notice.

“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:2-3)

As Christians we are the Bride of Christ. We need to be dressed and ready for our Bridegroom because… JESUS IS COMING BACK FOR US!!

“As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you.” (Isaiah 62:5)
