“I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.” (Isaiah 45:3)

When our kids were little, we hosted treasure hunts for holiday or birthday celebrations. It was a great way to add some fun to an already joyful occasion.

Each participant was given a first clue, which led to another clue, and so on.  Delayed gratification is a great way to build anticipation, and who doesn’t like searching for hidden treasure? On Easter Sunday the prize would be a single egg with money inside, and on birthdays the treasure trove was a goody bag filled with candy and party favors.

Our kids loved the hunt and couldn’t wait to see what was awaiting them at the end of the expedition. Gathering clues was like putting together pieces of a puzzle. With each new piece of information, the picture became more and more clear.  The reward was always worth the wait.

My husband and I loved hiding the clues, and we greatly enjoyed watching our kid’s reaction when a new piece of evidence was uncovered, pointing their way to the treasure.

The study of God’s Word is like going on a treasure hunt. There is no greater fortune to be found than that which is buried in the pages of Scripture. It is where God reveals Himself and we get to discover the great reward of eternal life in heaven with Him. God intentionally hid clues in His Word so we could experience the great joy of discovering who He is and what a relationship with Him means.

“My son, if you accept my words      and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom      and applying your heart to understanding— indeed, if you call out for insight      and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver      and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD      and find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:1-5)

I can’t help but think that God gets great joy from watching His children discover the treasure He has hidden for them.  He loves revealing Himself to us.

You and I have treasure awaiting us at the end of our journey on earth, and it’s priceless. God provides the clues, Jesus paid the price, and it’s available for the taking—we just need to grab hold of it and never let go.

Seek and you shall find.

“I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.” (Job 23:12)
