“I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.” (Proverbs 4:11)

On my way home from a wedding more than forty miles away, I finally had the opportunity to use my GPS system for the first time. Since my husband was out of town for work, I had to make the trek alone. Feeling nervous about driving home from an unfamiliar area, especially in the dark, I was very grateful when I remembered my son’s navigational system in my glove box.

As I headed towards home, trusting the GPS was not something that came easy to me. Every time the navigation system told me to turn, I was doubtful that it was taking me the right way. Since the journey home was dark, everything looked different to me.  I kept thinking I was lost.

The lure to turn down a different road toyed with my mind a couple of times, but thankfully, I resisted the temptation and followed the GPS instead.  Within minutes, highway signs appeared in the distance, confirming that I was going in the right direction. Forty-five minutes later I was pulling into my garage, safe and sound.

“So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left.” (Deuteronomy 5:32)

Sometimes I meet a similar resistance when it comes to following directions from God. The Holy Spirit tries to direct me one way, but I am still tempted to go another.

As I did with my GPS, we need to trust the guidance of the One who knows our way.  Things may seem uncertain at the moment, but if we continue to accept the guidance of the Holy Spirit, following God’s direction for our lives, we will arrive safely at our destination. We simply need to trust and obey.

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”  (Isaiah 30:21)
