“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

Does God have a favorite color?

I pondered this question one morning while staring out my living room window. The piercing blue sky provided an exquisite backdrop against the vibrant, green foliage of the trees.  The combination of colors was breath taking.

God reveals Himself through His Word, but He also reveals Himself through that which He has made. Scripture tells us that even those who have never read a Bible can still come to know God through His creation.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)

Is it possible that God’s favorite color is blue?  After all, this color appears more than any other throughout His creation.  The sky appears to be blue and surrounds the entire earth.  Water appears to be blue and covers about 70% of the earth’s surface, and from outer space, our world appears blue and is even referred to as the blue planet.

While contemplating these possibilities in my heart, God reminded me of a basic truth. Color is only visible when there is light.

“But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible.” (Ephesians 5:13)

At night, both the sky and water appear black. The color blue is only discernible when light is present. The absence of light makes it virtually impossible to see color or, for that matter, anything else God created.  But with light we can see God’s creation in all its glory.

In much the same way, we must allow God’s light and Spirit to illuminate our path of understanding.  The Spirit of enlightenment opens our eyes to all God’s glory, even when we are walking in darkness.

Questioning God’s favorite color may seem silly to you, but I happen to believe God delights in knowing we desire to learn such intimate details about Him. Of course, knowing God’s favorite color isn’t the important thing.  What really matters is that we know our Heavenly Father more intimately day by day.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

Hmm…. The color blue?  Sounds like a winner to me!
