“A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. He was over nine feet tall.” (1 Samuel 17:4)

You and I may not be asked to battle a giant like Goliath, but our adversaries can be just as intimidating. The giants we face appear in many different forms: A difficult marriage, broken or strained relationships, poor health, losing a loved one, unemployment, financial hardship, addiction, and insecurity are just a few of the goliaths we face.  No one is exempt from difficulties.

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Our adversaries are no match for God’s strength and power.

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)

We need to muster the kind of faith that young David experienced when he fought against Goliath. Some scholars speculate that the young shepherd boy may have been as young as twelve years old when this event took place.

Regardless of his age, God’s anointed understood this very important concept—the key to success requires placing the battle in God’s hands. David knew full well that victory rested with the LORD Almighty—he had God-confidence.

“David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” (1 Samuel 17:32)

“The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37)

The proclamation David shouted as he approached his foe is the same we can claim when facing our giants.

“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty.” (1 Samuel 17:45)

David triumphed over his enemy because he placed his trust in the Lord. We will find victory over our giants when we do the same.

“So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.” (1 Samuel 17:50)

Face your giant head-on, but remember—the battle is the Lord’s!

“You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.’” (2 Chronicles 20:17)
